Wilde Karotte is a fruity and aromatic Austrian orange skin contact wine made with Organic Welschriesling grape.
The first wine release from up-and-coming wine-maker Katrin Lautner. A very light and drinkable orange wine with a subtle, delicious funk and tartness, thanks to the wild yeast. Perfect for sipping on warm summer evenings. Vintage 2021.
Grapes were harvested in the middle of September, with one part of the grapes going through a carbonic maceration and the other part fermented on the skins for 2 weeks. The wine was aged in small used oak barrels and then bottled without filtration with just a little amount of sulphur.
The name for the wine comes from the native Austrian wild plant which grows beside roads, on flower fields and in the vineyards. The leaves, flowers and roots all have healing properties.
Katrin is the apprentice of renowned Austria wine-maker Markus Altenburger, since 2017, who has put the Blaufrankisch grape on the map in the world of wine. Katrin is an expert in mash-fermented white wines and has a passion for biodynamic viti- and horticulture. It seemed somewhat inevitable that she would go on to produce her own wine, so in 2019 alongside her role as a cellar master at the Altenburger vineyards, she made the first wine under her own name.
